weird ice cream flavours: peanut butter curry

Experimental flavours can often turn out to be surprisingly good and Humphry Slocombe in San Francisco is a master and melding flavours that you would never dream of!  This busy ice cream parlour in Mission has people lined up out the door waiting for their turn.  You won’t find vanilla, strawberry or chocolate here!

With over a hundred different flavours made, they feature 10-12 flavours a day and rotate them frequently.  We chose the peanut butter curry, hibiscus beet sorbet and candy apple.

It’s no surprise the peanut butter and curry work together as a sweet dessert.  Think of Thai curries with coconut milk, it’s reminiscent of that flavour combination.  At first it’s a creamy peanut butter taste and slowly, the curry emerges leaving you thinking that is quite curious.

I was afraid that that hibiscus beet sorbet would be too flowery (I’m not a fan of rosewater) but the flower taste was quite subtle with the earthiness of the beet being more dominant.  And if the bright magenta colour doesn’t attract you, the freshness of this sorbet will.

The candy apple was probably the most normal flavour out of the three.  If you closed your eyes and tasted this ice cream, it would taste exactly like a candy apple at the carnival.  Even though there wasn’t specks of red candy coating in the ice cream, you certainly could taste it!

It’s too bad we couldn’t have a taste of the chocolate sea salt ice cream that was displayed on the wall but jesus juice (red wine and coke) was certainly a crowd favourite!
