romer’s burger bar…the new resto around the block

25 Aug

There’s a new burger joint in town and we strolled in to Romer’s Burger Bar one late evening to see what all the hubbub was all about.  They use all natural, free-range angus beef and have some pretty great combination and flavours.  The burgers aren’t super cheap, around $10-$12 and it doesn’t include sides.  Their best value is definitely their snacky appetizers.

We tried three different burgers and found them pretty delicious!

I ordered a fun sounding drink off the menu…mango mint ice tea.  What an interesting flavour, tropical and fresh all around!

We got a sampler snacky appetizer that came with garlicky olives, dill pickles and roasted nuts.  What a great deal…only $7.00 and a generous helping.  The green olives were firm with a great garlic marniade.  The dills were a little too pickled for my taste but the others loved the zing and spiciness.  The roasted nuts were warm and spiced just right with peanuts, almonds, and hazelnuts.

First burger up!  I ordered the maple bacon pork burger….yup…all pig meat for me.  The apple matchsticks lay atop a thick pork patty with a creamy dressing on the bun.  I was expecting the patty to be on the drier side but it was still nice and moist.  I was hoping the apple flavour would be more prominent but perhaps the wrong kind of apple was used.

The veggie burger was a surprise!  Artfully plated…the bun was…portobello mushrooms!  No dry veggie patty on this guy, instead there is a large stack containing eggplant, zucchini, tomatoes, basil and goat cheese.

And the Man’s Man burger, big ol piece of beef patty with bacon, cheddar and a pile of onion strings that could’ve have been slightly larger.  Juicy and packed full of flavour, this burger was fulfilling and darn right meaty.

I was so looking forward to the truffle oil and reggiano fries but was sorely disappointed when I had a taste.  I’ve had this before and it was delightful bit these fries were bland and you could barely taste the truffle oil.  Sigh.

Dessert!  The fresh baked pie of the day was apple…classic.  A large bowl of mascarpone cream came with this delightful pie and it was a nice change from cheap whipped cream out of a can.  The crust was flakey and the filling wasn’t too sweet.

Crazy decadent and carnival-like treat…drunken doughnuts!  These little guys were freshly fried and dusted with powdered sugar.  Three dipping sauces came with it, kaula with nutella, limoncello and maple whisky…all delicious!

Those appies were out of this world!!! Still say the veggie could have done with less oil on the bun–made it impossible to actually pick it up rather than use fork & knife, but still amazing flavor! Do you still give the nod to Refuel for best burger in Vancouver??
