it’s gourmet baby burger night!

12 Apr

I love miniature foods, baby carrots, mini cucumbers, bite-size cupcakes and of course baby burgers.  Not only are they adorable but somehow their size makes them seem like they taste better.  The only thing I know how to make with ground beef is some pasty-y thing or shepherd’s pie….but I guess I can add gourmet baby burgers to the list.  Here’s my recipe for meaty burgers with all the fixings!

What you need!
1 pkg of ground beef
1 large yellow onion
3 cloves of garlic minced
1 package of button mushrooms sliced
1 egg
2 tbsp dark soy
2 tbsp light soy
2 tbsp HP or A1 sauce
1 tsp black pepper
6 mini buns (I used artisan dinner rolls)
50g smoked cheese (gouda or cheddar)
olive oil

What to do!

1. Add the ground beef, egg, minced garlic, and seasonings (soy sauces, HP sauce, pepper) nto a large bowl and mix gently.  Divide the ground beef into 6 portions.

2.  Roll each portion with your hands and press into patties.  Keep it light!  Don’t mix too much or compress the patties too much or it could become overworked.

3.  Peel and cut your onion into thin slices.  Drizzle some olive oil in a pan set on medium-low heat.  Cover your pan and let the onions cook away!  They will begin to get soft, stir once in a while, and keep on cooking until they are caramelized and brown.  This can take up to 25 minutes.

4.  In another pan on high heat, drizzle some olive oil and add your sliced mushrooms.  Drizzle some dark soy sauce (about 1 1/2 tbsp) for colour and flavour.  Continue cooking on high until soft.  Set aside.

always cook mushrooms on the highest heat to avoid them releasing a whack of moisture

5.  On high heat, place the burger patties down and cook for 4-5 minutes or until you can see the burger sides starting to cook.  Flip over and add slices of smoked cheese on the top.  Cook for another 4-5 minutes.

Your onions should be done now and look like this!

6.  Cut your buns in a half and assemble your mini burgers!  Add any condiments you like for extra flavour!  Enjoy!

Approx Costs:

ground beef – $5.00
mushrooms – $2.99
onion – $0.50
seasoning – $1.50

Total $9.99 for 6 mini burgers or $3.33 per person (2 burgers a serving)
