back up vegetarians! it’s steak time…

9 Apr

Since when was it taboo to eat red meat?  Le sigh…I don’t care, I want a hunk of meat!  Delicious juicy big hunks of meat.  Surprisingly, steak isn’t so expensive to make it at home if you buy it on sale.  I always inevitably end up making a few veggie sides with it to compensate.  Here’s my spice rub for yum-tacular steaks!

What you need!
3 striploin steaks
1 tsp sumac
1 tsp ground chili flakes
1/2 tsp ginger
1 tbsp sea salt
1 tsp cumin
1 tsp ground fresh pepper
olive oil

What to do!

1.  Add all your spices in the bowl and mix.  You could really put any combination you like but I prefer ones that have some sort of kick or bold taste.  The sumac is for a rounded earthy flavour.  The ginger, chilis and pepper are for the kick.  Salt and cumin for savoury.  I try to avoid any sweet tasting herbs or spices.

2.  Make sure your steaks are at room temperature and pat dry with paper towels.  Rub the spice rub on both sides and let it sit for a few minutes on the counter or put it back in the fridge and let it sit for an hour.

3.  I’m not a fan of leathery over-cooked steak so I cook them until they are just rare  On the highest heat, drizzle some olive oil and place a steak on the pan.  For rare steak, sear for a couple of minutes and flip to repeat.  Cook until desired doneness.

4.  Let the meat rest for 5 minutes so the juices get sucked back in and then eat with some veggies!  On the bbq, these steaks will be even more amazing!

Approx Costs:

steaks – $12.00
spice rub – $1.50

Total – $13.50 for 3 servings or $4.50 per person
